Fort Standard Stone Trivet

Take the Brooklyn-bound Ikea ferry from Wall Street, and the first point of Red Hook that swings into view is an impressive redbrick Civil War warehouse abutting the water. At this point you wish you could ask the skipper to pull up to the wharf and allow you to disembark. Among the many creative tenants within are Fort Standard, a bewhiskered duo who work with metal and stone and wood, creating contemporary shapes from ancient materials. Their marble trivets are essentially modern, and yet the hexagonal cut of the marble suggests that they might have looked at home in Renaissance Italy.
